Skin Cancer Surgery

Surgery is a common treatment for basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, particularly on the face and neck.

Basal cell appears on the outermost layer of the skin. It is the most common type of skin cancer. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but they can go quite large. In rare cases, it can spread and cause death. Squamous cell is less common but is more deadly as it likely to metastasize. Both types of cancer create facial blemishes that can affect a person’s health and mental wellbeing. Both types of skin cancer are commonly found on the face and neck and can be successfully removed by a skilled facial plastic surgeon.

Dr. Dino Madonna, a Board Certified facial plastic surgeon, incorporates several surgical techniques and approaches based on his extensive training and experience. The surgical options depend on the patient’s type of skin cancer, the size of the cancer, location and other factors.

Most often, the surgery can be done in the Lake Ear, Nose, Throat and Facial Plastic Surgery offices located in The Villages®, Leesburg and Tavares, Florida or at its affiliated outpatient surgery center using a local anesthetic (numbing medicine).

For skin cancers with a high risk of spreading, surgery sometimes will be followed by other treatments as well as coordination with an oncologist or other specialist.

If you’ve had Mohs surgery for facial skin cancer, Dr. Dino Madonna also specializes in Mohs surgery defect repairs.
